Save Time & Money With An Interior Designer

By Yvonne Fix Daniels, ASID

Whether your firm is moving to new quarters or renovating existing space, having a design professional on your team will save time and money.  A professional interior designer orchestrates many facets of a given project, allowing the client to concentrate on doing what they do best.

A qualified interior designer will provide services tailored to the needs of each individual client.  The designer’s services are performed in orderly phases.

Layout/Space usage options.

Based upon preliminary analysis, equipment and personnel requirements will be integrated into the parameters of new or renovated space.  Layout options will then be presented for review to determine optimal utilization of available space.

Plan generation and specifications.

Once layout options have been approved, a detailed set of plans will be developed to include partitioning pans, reflected ceiling and lighting plans, and related detail drawings.  Specifications and/or schedules will be made for such items as decorative finishes, furnishings, millwork, window treatments, hardware, and interior glazing.

Drawings/specifications revision.

After all drawings and specifications have been carefully reviewed, any necessary revisions will be made.  Blueprints and written specifications will then be distributed to contractors and other trades involved in the project.

Construction and implementation.

The designer will periodically visit the job site to oversee the finish construction process and to insure conformity with plans and specifications.

Installation of furnishings.

Supervision for the installation of furnishings is usually provided to insure that all products are correctly installed in a manner that is timely and efficient.

Accessories

The designer will select and supervise the installation of all artwork and accessories.  Plantscaping and signage will be arranged for as desired.

Concept Through Completion.

A professional interior designer has the training to deliver, from concept through completion an office environment that is both efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

What is ASID?

There is a specific criterion to be considered when choosing an interior designer.  Professional status in the interior design field is held by those designers who have completed predetermined academic and work experience requirements.  This, in addition to a nationally administered exam (NCIDQ National Council for Interior Design Qualification) is the means by which a designer achieves professional membership in either ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) or IIDA (International Interior Design Association).  Both organizations subscribe to a code of ethics which further insures your confidence in selecting a designer.

Design Fees.

Compensation for the services mentioned above varies according to the individual design firm.  In Michigan, rates usually range from $75 to $125 per hour.  Other forms of compensation include a “per square foot” fee or a percentage of total building costs.

If your preference is to concentrate on your area of expertise, rather than to become entangled in a labyrinth of construction detail, get a professional interior designer on your team. – Save Time & Money.
